As some of you know, I was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease) back in 2010. This is a fatal degenerative nerve disease with no known cause or cure. It affects people in different ways but typically ends in total paralysis and death due to respiratory failure, unless you undergo some invasive body modification procedures to help prevent that. Being an illustrator/co
ncept artist, naturally it took my arms and hands first. I haven't held a pencil since early 2011. Bummer, but I discovered I could use an iPhone with my toes. I figured out how to use the Brushes app and made a handful of paintings. My toes have since lost the dexterity for that, so I've started using eye-gaze controlled technology to type and hopefully paint.

To help generate some income while I wait for science to get its stuff together, my awesome sister Marice has put together an online shop featuring some of my artwork. Please consider picking up some cool Tsai swag and sharing this post!

The store is located at: francistsaistore.storenvy.com/

Thanks,
Francis

hi peeps

just wanted to drop a quick note. i havent been too diligent lately in posting new art and replying to all your questions and comments (although i do read them all). for that i apologize. i'm dealing with some health issues at the moment that are preventing me from drawing/painting and playing music, my two great passions in life. i dont want to get into much more detail than that for the moment. lets just say I gots some stuff on my plate right now but hope to be back in the saddle someday soon!

y'all take care.

I was recently interviewed by Newsarama, along with TRACKER writer Jonathan Lincoln. You can read it here!

A second interview with Comic Book Resources here:

The CBR interview is a little more nuts and bolts in terms of art. In case any of you are into that sort of thing... :)

Hi there

I saw that my new art book, called EXTREME WORLDS: the complete guide to drawing and painting sci-fi art is available at amazon.com (link below). I'm not sure if it's actually out in bookstores yet, but let me know if you see it. Outside the US - I'm pretty sure it will be available via regular online sources, but I know there were some issues with the last book.

Anyway, just wanted to pass that along! Thanks - :D

What Star Wars "expanded universe" type novels would you recommend for someone who hasn't ready any of those?

Hey all

I wanted to post the first 6 pages of RED SKY, a new original story that I am working on with writer Violet Glaze. This is a science fiction story taking place a few years from now. Ideally we'd like to publish through a traditional publisher like Image or Dark Horse, although I have been increasingly interested in the digital outlets like iverse media and longbox.

Anyway, I'd love to hear what you all think of it so far.

Thanks!

I'll be sitting in at Top Cow's booth (#2629) on Friday July 24 from 4:00pm to 5:00pm, and Saturday the 25th from 4:00pm to 5:00pm. I will be there with writer Jonathan Lincoln previewing Tracker, a new limited series from Top Cow. Come by and say hi so I'm not just sitting there picking my nose!

Hey peeps

I sent in the final revisions to my next art how-to book a while ago, and the publisher recently sent me a shot of the front and back cover art. This one will be a little more demo-oriented than the previous book on fantasy characters. The book will be out in late October/early November and is available for pre-order at most online book sellers. Hope you enjoy it!

Thanks to GaioumonBatou gaioumonbatou.deviantart.com and Thiefoworld thiefoworld.deviantart.com/ for the award on the Gamma Corps piece. And thanks for all the comments and feedback, sorry if I didn't respond to each one! It is quite an honor and is much appreciated.

Still pretty swamped with work right now, but I guess that's a good thing for a freelancer. What that means in terms of dA is that I haven't been posting a whole lotta new art lately, and probably can't for a bit yet. One gig that has been pretty fun recently is working on some character/costume designs for Zack Snyder's new movie Sucker Punch. My work on that will be wrapping up shortly, and then I can start getting out from under some stuff.

Have a nice day everybody! :)

Hey thanks for all the suggestions on web hosts earlier. I went with Dreamhost, which so far has been great. I was using Powweb before, which was pretty good for a while and then things started to go downhill. I changed my site to a combination of Wordpress blog and gallery/portfolio pages a while back, and the Powweb infrastructure just did not seem to be up to the task. Now, when you go to my site it actually loads right away instead of giving you a blank page for 3-5 seconds. I kinda like that!

Also, thanks as always for the comments, crits and favorites - I wish I could reply to every single person, but from time to time I get inundated with work and don't check up over here for a week or so, and by that time I am hopelessly behind. Like now. Every once in a while I will go back and try to catch up and reply to people, which is why you might see a response from me to a comment you made six months ago.

I haven't posted a lot of art lately, mainly due to pretty much all of my work at the moment being either NDA or similar. I am revising the last few pages of a new art book - this one will center on science fiction art, and will be much more demo-oriented than the fantasy characters book. There will be some stuff you may have seen already, and some stuff you haven't. It'll all be original, non-client material, and the book should drop around November of this year. I'm also working on a new project for Top Cow, which is supposed to be previewed at this year's San Diego Comic Con. I'm enjoying that quite a bit although it's a ton of work! Aside from that, I'm doing the regular gigs of video game design and RPG illustrations.

Laters -

Thanks to everyone for their input on the web hosting. I'm crammed with work right now so it will be a couple weeks at least before I can get back into that.

On another note, please check out my friend Dave Wilkins, an amazing artist - new to deviantArt, and about time!

Anyone got recommendations for good hosting for a wordpress blog/gallery2 installation? I'm considering inmotionhosting.com at the moment, if any of you have any experience with them. I don't want barebones hosting but I also don't need Skynet - something in between. My current host is not cutting it - seems to be slooooooowwww with my current setup. Actually if you can go by my site ( www.teamgt.com ) and let me know how fast or slow it comes up for you that would be helpful too....

thanks!

Hi

If you have a copy of 100 Ways to Create Fantasy Figures and enjoyed it or found it useful, could I trouble you to leave a review at amazon.com? (or amazon.ca, or amazon.uk, etc.). If you thought it was garbage you could put that too, but obviously I'd prefer favorable reviews! :D

Thank you my peeps.
